Rob's coral greenhouse build

So, here we are at last

After years of planning and dreaming, we've finally got some progress on the greenhouse.

Here's what's planned:

It's a steel portal framed 15m x 5m structure set into a ground beam foundation. Not shown in the picture are the glass and fibre-cement cladding details. I'm using tempered 5mm glass for the left (Eastern) 12 meters. For the 3 meter bit on the right between the doors, the roof will be tiled with fiber cement (slate lookalike) tiles.

Here's an old (quite incorrect) external view. It shows the cladded versus glass sections well, but the door's in the wrong position and some other details are out too.

The greenhouse will be connected to the main 10000 liter tank in the house by these pipes:

Which pop out again over here:

Here's another view of the pipes, showing the greenhouse foundation nicely:

The rightmost big blue tub is my 1000 litre sump. The tank and most of the tubs will drain into it. The white thing arcing into the air is my 25mm electricity conduit. Under it you can see the orange polycop for water.

Here are some of my extra culture vessels and spare bits and pieces:

The concrete pour was an absolute circus.

Here's Coenie, the steel guy, doing his surveying thing:

Then the pour:

Hopefully the steel should go up on Wednesday.

Hey Carl Yeah, of course there'll be an IMACSA tour. Not sure how to slot it in to the weekend time-wise, but I'll make a plan.

Nick, there'll be around 12000 liters initially over around 22 square meters. The blue tubs are kinda "phase 1". I've been so inspired by the fish breeding guys I'm keen to give that a try too. That'll require proper glass tanks in racks for broodstock.

ooooh nice to see you on your way my friend. Just curious, but why did you decide to take one wall so high?

The back wall? That's South facing. Raising it high and painting it white helps reflect winter sunlight back into the tubs (well, that's the plan, anyway).

ok, will be interesting to see if it works. Have you given shading any though, or will you be shading individual tanks as needed?

You know Rob, you want to make me hurt on such a nice Sunday?

Awesome looking house, with a view to kill for and the man is laying foundations for a REEF OUTHOUSE to compliment his internal ocean...

Niiice mate, really nice to see it all finally coming together.

Marc

I'm going to shade individual tanks, Regal.

Heheh, sorry, Marc. Hopefully it will all come together in the end. It's been quite a long trek.

I've been thinking of growing Wisteria or another vine that loses its (shading) leaves during winter. I'm quite keen on passive heating/cooling techniques.

The Goat-hangers just think the mountain's an extra large mine dump, so no secret lost there

Looking good Rob. A tour will be great if you can get one in at IMACSA.
